Yu-Ling Cheng

Professor at the University of Toronto

Yu-Ling Cheng is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto. Her educational background is in chemical engineering (S.B. and S.M. from MIT, and PhD from Stanford).

She has applied her strong training in chemical engineering to research in drug delivery systems and pharmacokinetics – which has resulted in numerous publications as well as 13 U.S. patents. She is a highly regarded educator, with many departmental, university, and provincial level teaching awards. Over the past decade, she has shifted her research and educational focus towards “global engineering”, directing her efforts towards challenges faced by the world’s most vulnerable populations. She has developed new courses focusing on enhancing the impact of technology, and worked on research projects related to micronutrient fortification, medical oxygen supply decision tools, and most notably a major project on “re-inventing the toilet” with the goal of developing an off-grid sanitation solution for the 2.5 billion people in the world without access to basic sanitation.

She has served in several leadership roles within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, including as the founding Director of the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN). She is a member of the University’s Teaching Academy as a winner of the President’s Teaching Award and has been named Distinguished Professor of Global Engineering. She is also a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
